End April early May on the shores of Lake Trasimeno 10,000 kite flyers and many more revelers come to enjoy the festa. There is also hot-air ballooning, trekking and mountain bike events. EASTER EVERYWHERE |
Processions are held in many towns on Easter Friday or Saturday (sometimes) Easter Sunday. Churches have statues of the Virgin and Jesus that are often be paraded through the towns. Traditional costumes, olive branches as palm fronds are used in processions and to decorate chruches. In Panicale, cheese is... well, the big cheese. 'Ruzzolone' is a game played since Etruscan times. Huge wheels of crusty old pecorino cheese, weighing about 4 kilos, are thrown and rolled around the village walls. The cheeese to cross the line within the fewest number of throws, wins. After the winning cheese, there is, of course music and wine. 30 mins from Villa Gioiella |

In honour of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Calendimaggio festival is celebrated on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday of May. Flowers adorn the streets and people dress in historical costumes. There are competitions with love songs, games and events. The festival leads to the prestigious Palio, an event which mirrors the rivalry of the Fiumi and the Nepis families in the1300s that lasted for two centuries. |

On May 15th on Sant Ubaldos Eve 3 huge wooden 'candles' are raced 4km through Gubbio with different colors according to the Saint depicted. Yellow for St. Ubaldo, light blue for St. George and black for St. Antony. About 1 hour 30min from Villa Gioiella. |

BEVAGNA FESTIVAL OF THE GAITE |
In the second half of June Over 10 days, Bevagna recreates itself as it was in the middle ages. People conduct their daily business in full costume and little shops open up selling handicrafts. 60 days after Easter many Umbrian villages cover their streets with lush flower carpets once a year for the 'Corpus Domini,' processions. The most famous “Infiorate” are at Spello, Citta della Pieve, and Orvieto. Get there early! Spello:1 hour 10 mins from Villa Gioiella. Orvieto 1 hour 40, and Citta della Pieve, 30 mins. |
